For a centuries-old farmhouse in Millbrook, New York, Chused & Co. was brought in to help revive a storied estate without erasing its past. Working in collaboration with architect Doug Larson, we approached the home’s rich patina—sloping floors, original moldings, and antique glass—with deep respect, restoring clarity to its layout and breathing new life into its interiors. The goal was to preserve the soul of the house while creating a layered, livable retreat for a modern family of five, who use the property as a creative weekend refuge.
Drawing inspiration from the home's literary legacy and pastoral setting, we used saturated, moody colors, tactile fabrics, and meaningful objects—both old and new—to create a sense of quiet drama and enduring warmth. From a hidden powder room tucked behind a swiveling bookcase to a library hallway lined with inherited books, each space was designed to surprise and resonate. Our design honors what came before while ensuring that every corner of the home feels purposeful, intimate, and alive.
